Apple Intelligence Release
Apple has finally joined the AI race
Apple has released iOS and iPadOS 18.1, and macOS Sequoia 15.1. Along with several fixes for dangerous exploits, Apple has released the first set of Apple Intelligence features. Apple Intelligence is available for all Apple devices with an M series or A17 Pro CPU or newer. This includes all recent Macs, the iPad Mini, Air, and Pro, in addition to the iPhone 15 Pro/Pro Max, and all iPhone 16’s. In this release, we got Systemwide Writing Tools, New Focus Options, a re-designed Siri, a more intelligent photos app, and call recording.
The re-designed Siri now features a new look, lighting up around the edge of the phone as well as the option to type instead of speak to Siri. In addition, Siri now has improved language-understanding capabilities and can understand when you stumble over your words. No more Hey Siri…uh…cancel’s
System-wide writing tools bring new rewriting, proofreading, and summarizing capabilities to almost anywhere you write, including third-party apps. Simply highlight the text you want adjusted or summarized, and select writing tools next to the copy, cut, and paste options. It can rewrite that email to your boss to be professional, concise, or friendly, and proofread it for grammar, word choice, and sentence structure issues. You can also select text, such as that long team update email, and summarize it as a paragraph, bulleted key points, table, or list.
Focus mode now features an important notifications option, where only time-sensitive, relevant notifications come through. Long notifications, such as that 50 messages thread from your friends can also be summarized, reducing the time required to get caught up.
On compatible devices, you can now use natural language search in the photos app, such as Mom and Dad at the beach, and it will show you all relevant images. You can also now remove unwanted objects from the background of an image, like that random tourist in the photo from your vacation to Italy.
Finally, we got call recording. Simply press the button in the top left of the call popup to start recording, and when the call ends, you get an automatically generated transcript with the recording.
More Apple Intelligence features are expected in December, including integration with OpenAI’s ChatGPT.
